Runner Detroit

The walls are packed with paintings hung side by side and salon style, many of which are accompanied by a backstory allegedly written by the artworks themselves. From canvas to canvas, there is a consistent sentiment of nihilism that is communicated through haphazard references to violence and drugs. There is also a highly liberated application of languages and symbols that integrate as seamlessly here as they do in sci-fi movies like Blade Runner or The Fifth Element.

Japanese video games clearly provide a template here for American branding to don. Icons and logos that dominate visual landscapes around the world are incessantly morphed into subliminal messages, illustrating a kind of meaninglessness that can only be born out of hyperconnectivity. The point, as presented in the exhibition’s press release, is to highlight the impact that the Internet has had on the preservation of tradition.

Truths that have been sustained for centuries unravel when challenged by an infinite array of worldviews. Bots have become the primary content generators. Algorithms build echo chambers for users to free-fall into. The quality of goods and services is compromised by our desire for speed as we willfully exchange age-old values for a stream of wild and precarious newness.

The Voyeur Bordello Gallery

On November 15th, from 6 PM to 10 PM, join us at The Voyeur Bordello for an exciting art show titled In Case of Emergency, Refresh Feed featuring the provocative works of local Detroit artist Palm Treat. This exhibit promises to immerse art lovers and creative minds in a playful exploration of our digital realities through the lens of unconventional formatting, bold colors, and experimental typography.

Palm Treat’s artwork has been shown in Internationalimmersive environments like that of Meow Wolf in Santa Fe and the soft aesthetics of Lonely Kids Club down under in Australia. His new solo exhibition at The Voyeur Bordellois a vibrant response to what some refer to as the internet’' enshittification and the enigmatic Dead Internet Theory. This theory suggests that the online world has devolved into a landscape manipulated by bots and algorithmic curation, stifling genuine human connections. In light of this, Palm Treat harnesses inspiration from the Vaporwave movement and anti-design principles to create hauntingly nostalgic paintings that evoke questions about the nature of our digital memories: Are they real? Were they digitally implanted?

Directions

This show invites attendees to contemplate the boundaries between digital and physical realities while enjoying a unique blend of humor and insight. Palm Treat’s works not only challenge the viewer’s perception but also spark a dialogue about the impact of technology on contemporary life.

The event is designed for artists, art lovers, and anyone curious about the evolving landscape of art and technology in Detroit and the surrounding areas. Join us for an evening of thought-provoking art, lively discussions, and a chance to connect with fellow enthusiasts.
